open water swimming

Swim

Ok so this sounds crazy I know…but It’s really not I swear. I know what your thinking but there’s nothing to be afraid of I see people doing this all the time at the beach and I even decided to give it a try when my swim team went together one day. Yes you swim in the open ocean, but you follow the coastline of a beach. It not like your swimming in the middle of the ocean.

Swim between the buoy’s to track how much you’ve swam. Between each buoy is around 150- 200 yd’s. Swimming against the currents and waves will help strengthen you and your stroke. But open water swimming is not just for competitive swimmers, anyone can try it just for fun and good excersize.

So why open water and not a swimming pool? Well you can enjoy the beautiful ocean setting and gain the freedom and space for your stroke, instead of stopping at a wall every 25 yards. Try it! It’s a lot of fun and gives you the chance to help build your stroke in a new different way!

- DO get a good pair of goggles that don’t leak! (unless you want salt water in your eyes the whole time)

- DON’T swim if the weather is not good that day or if the water is really dark

- DO swim with a partner, definately have an adult with you

- DON’T go any farther than the buoy’s

- DO wear a brightly colored swim cap or suit so boats and lifeguards can see you

SPF PLZ!

Sure the sun is cool. But don't let the sun fool you into ruining your beach day!

Sunscreen is a MUST, especially in Florida. Many people don’t use sunscreen because they think sunscreen prevents you from getting a tan… but this is not  true at all. Sunscreen just prevents you from getting sunburned, don’t worry you’ll still get tan, just not fried. Don’t use suncreen lower than SPF 30, it doesnt protect you enough. So remember to slather up before you head out!

TIP #1: If you don’t know how much sunscreen to apply, just put on enough to fit in a shot glass. According to scientists its the perfect amount to cover your whole body.

TIP #2: When at the beach reapply your suncreen everytime you get out of the water, even if your using waterproof! You should be replying sunscreen at least every two hours. But no matter how often you reapply  your sunscreen, you need to    choose the SPF level that’s right for you.

TIP #3: DON’T FORGET YOUR LIPS! This is a common mistake most people make, yes your lips do get sunburned! Use a chapstick with a least an SPF 15.
Sure the sun is cool. But don’t let the
sun fool you into ruining your beach day!

florida living.

Florida Living. Is being outside. The beach. Flips flops, shorts, and tank tops all year round. Wearing Uggs and sweatshirts to make us feel like its “winter”, even though its 85. Water. Riding in the car with the windows down. Relaxed. Walking everywhere until we can drive :) . Being barefoot all the time. Old guys wearing Speedos, confidently. Wearing sunglasses inside. People from everywhere. Writing your name in the sand. Being late. Tan lines. Sweating at late night football games. Mickey Mouse. The ocean saltwater stinging your eyes. Random rain. Waking up with the sun beating into your room. Swimming. Sunburns && aloe. On Friday not knowing what your doing that weekend. Doing whatever, whenever. People saying you’re so lucky you live in Florida, we are. Florida is everything. There’s nothing like it.
